INTRODUCTION
The University of Saugar
renamed as Doctor Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya on February 2, 1983 was founded
in July 1946 by late Dr. Sir. Harisingh Gour who donated a sum of Rs.20 laces
for the purpose. The university has received under his will more than Rs.80
laces. Dr. Gour piloted the affairs of the University in its early stage as its
founder Vice Chancellor. The campus of the university is located on Patharia
Hills over an area of more than 1,750 acres.
The earlier University of Saugar Act, 1946 was repealed by the M. P. Vishwavidhalaya
Adhiniyam (No 22 of 73) with effect from May 4, 1973.
SOME FACILITIES PROVIDED BY THE UNIVERSITY
Library and Research Facilities :-
Jawaharlal Nehru Library is the central library of university.
It has a 3-storeyed building designed to accommodate 3 laces volumes and 400
readers. Books and Periodicals (1998-99) 2,86,943; books issued 1,09,500;
readers attendance 2,50,000.
Research Facilities :-
Central Instrumentation Laboratory: Provide facilities for
advanced level research to scholars and teachers in Botany, Zoology, Chemistry,
Physics, Geology, Anthropology, Geography and Psychology. It is equipped with
following sophisticated analytical instruments-C WNMR Spectrometer, Transmission
Electron Microscope, Dual beam Scanning spectro photometer, 60,000 rpm
ultracentrifuge, DCM-Micro-comp, PSI Serions 32 Mini com with 32 Bits capacity.
University Science Instrumentation Center :-
Provides facilities for designing and fabrication of
existing equipments, renovation of existing equipments in teaching departments
and affiliated colleges; repairs, maintenance and recalibration of research
equipments.
Private Studies :-
The university enrolls private candidates for BA, B. Sc., B. Com., MA,
M. Com. & M. Sc. (Mathematics). Enrolment is open to persons who have been
residing within the jurisdiction of the university for 12 months. Candidates
should have passed the prescribed qualifying exam and satisfy other conditions
as laid down by the university. A candidate must complete practical work in the
subject in the university teaching department/affiliated college.
Distance Education Programmes :-
B.Lib.Sc., M.Lib.Sc., BCJ, and PG Diplomas in Population Education, Adult &
Cont Education, Forestry Management, Environmental Management.
SPECIAL FEATURES
Tutorials and Seminars are held for U. G. and P. G. students.
Internal Assessment : There is a Provision for internal assessment in
Science subjects; 20% of marks for practical are reserved for this purpose.
MISCELLANEOUS
Health Centre : Located in the campus and is under the charge of a whole
time medical officer and other staff.
Film Library : The university has a Film Library under
a separate department of Audiovisual Education, Documentary films obtained from
various sources are shown to the staff/students from time to time.
Physical Education and Games : Department of Physical Education organizes
games and sports for promotion of physical activities in Football, Hockey,
Volleyball, Basketball and Cricket.
Youth Welfare and Cultural Activities : Students are trained in Music,
folk dances and fine arts.
Hostels Facilities : Three hostels for boys with 408 seats and one for
girls with 105 seats. There is a separate Government hostel for SC/ST candidates
with 100 seats within the university campus.
Employment Advisory and Guidance Bureau : The Bureau has a whole-time
Employment Officer to advise and guide students seeking employment and planning
for technical and professional courses

Eligibility : 12 year Higher Secondary examination of Madhyamik

Eligibility : 12 years Higher Secondary examination.
Duration : 3 years with examination each year.
Subjects : Part I Foundation Course and other 3 core
subjects; Part II Foundation course and other 3 core subjects. Part III
Foundation Course 3 Compulsory Papers and any one specialization out of the
following: Applied Economics; Accounting; Management.
M. Com.
Eligibility : B. Com. examination.
Duration : 2 years with Previous and Final examination at the end
of first and second year.
Subjects : Compulsory (two in Previous and two in Final
examination) besides the compulsory papers, the candidate will have to select
one of the prescribed specializations for M. Com. (Previous & Final)
Examination.
Provided further that a candidate obtaining not less than 60% marks at the M.
Com. Previous Examination may be permitted to take these in lieu of one of the
papers of the optional group offered by him at the M. Com. Final Examination.

Eligibility : Bachelor's degree with 50% marks and merit at the admission

The university awards degree of PhD in the Faculties of Science, Life Science,

Faculties of Social Science Arts, Communication and Education and DSc in the
Faculties of Science, Life Science and Technical.
PhD
: PhD is awarded on the basis of a thesis submitted after doing
research work in an approved topic for at least 24 months. Candidates who have
passed the Master's degree in I or II division can supplicate for the degree.
DLitt, DSc :
The degree is awarded on the
basis of a thesis submitted after doing research work in an approved topic. PhD
degree holders of 2 years standing are eligible to register for degree.
